Describe yourself in 3 words:
Passionate, determined, loving.

What is your life motto?
Start right now! Do the hardest things first so that you still have the rest of the day left to do the things you enjoy.

When did you start pursuing your career and how long did it take to become successful?
We started in 1992 from our small home in Greensboro, NC. It took a passionate belief in what we were doing since the first year was a struggle. By the end of the second year,
we exceeded over $1 million in sales and we haven’t looked back since. Now at almost $1 billion in sales, we still feel we are just getting started.

How many hours did you dedicate to pursuing your dream?
I wake-up at 9:00 am, go to bed at 4:30 am everyday. I’ll sleep when I’m dead.

Describe how difficult the business really is?
It can get complicated, but I really believe that you can be anything you want to be. You just need to trust in yourself and get out of your own way! Decide what you want to do, make a plan and work to get it done – sometimes it takes longer than you think, but if you aren’t afraid to dive into the business it will happen – believe you can!

What is the mistake that taught you an extremely valuable lesson?
The biggest mistakes usually come from not listening to myself. Trust your instincts and keep moving forward.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given to date?
That success is easier than everyone thinks. Most people don’t even show up so there is no competition.

What is the piece of advice that you weren’t?
You don’t have to be an expert at everything in order to succeed. As you start to achieve your dreams, the right people and resources will arise to assist along your journey.

In your mind, is formal training essential?
Passion was my training. Every person is different. If you believe that you need guidance on how to be become more successful, then ask for some! Take a class, find a mentor. Do what you feel is essential for you – whether it be formal training or flying by the seat of your pants.

What are some steps emerging talent can take to start/further their career?
You must be clear with what you want to accomplish. Think about it constantly and develop a burning desire to make it happen. Use my ‘Triple D’ approach: 1. Define your Goal 2. Detail your Plan to accomplish your goal 3. Devote every ounce of your energy to your plan.

What kept you going when you felt like giving up?
Knowing that so many people were counting on me and my incredible determination to never quit.

Do you believe that ‘making it’ is about luck and being in the right place at the right time?
Perhaps there is a little luck involved but I believe you make your own luck. The keys are knowing what you want, believing that you can succeed, being absolutely determined to make it happen and enjoying the journey. Being in the right place at the right time is important but what’s more important is KNOWING you’re in the right place at the right time and taking action now!
